Bogumiła Suwara:
Questions for authors of electronic literature
I. How would you define/describe elegance in (electronic) poetry? Try to think of antonyms and synonyms of “elegance“ in electronic literature. Think of specific works you perceive as “elegant electronic literature”, maybe also some examples of non-elegant projects. (in this context, elegance also acquires a special meaning provided by mathematics and computer science)
- In relation to elegance, how do you feel about the style of computer programming used in your work?
Farkas:
So far I have never thought about analyzing literature and the arts from the
perspective of 'elegance‘. I am not really well versed in mathematics or computer
science, so I can only guess what ‚elegance‘ would be in that context – I assume
it would be the clarity of thought and logic, a certain kind of plain simplicity,
proportionality, harmony. These characteristics naturally play an essential
part in the arts as well. They are as essential as ambiguity, dichotomy, perplexity,
exaggeration or disharmony. Because of this I find it difficult to apply the
concept of elegance in relation to the arts. On the other hand, the tools that
create electronic literature – the softwares and programming languages – certainly
can be charaterized by such a concept. However, I do not directly work with
programming languages any more.
Ezek a tulajdonságok természetesen fontos szerepet játszanak a művészetben is.
II. What makes you feel pleasure/joy in the process of
1. – “using” (reading) the works
of others
2. – collective or individual creation of electronic poetry/art?
Farkas:
1. The emotional processes taking part during the reception of an artistic experience
are most likely not significantly influenced by the type of tools they were
created with (in this case analogue or digital). The question „What makes you
feel pleasure/joy in the process of “using” (reading) the works of others” is
as banal as the answer would be, as the reception itself is probably a very
banal process. At the same time it is extremely complex, and definitely different.
Thus it would be extremely hard for me to give a meaningful answer to this question.
2. The process of creation follows similar rules to the process of reception.
It is mere banality, extreme complexity and it definitely works differently
each time around. There is an additional personal peculiarity here: I do not
feel pleasure or joy during the process of creation. Afterwards sometimes, for
moments.
1. A befogadás során lezajló érzelmi
A kérdés "What makes you
feel pleasure/joy in the process of using (reading) the works of others"
éppen annyira banális, amilyen banális lenne a válasz, mivel a befogadás maga
valószínűleg egy roppantul banális folyamat. Ugyanakkor rendkívül komplex, és
minden esetben más. Tehát aligha tudnám ezt a kérdést értelmesen megválaszolni.
III. Are these feelings (of pleasure/joy) related to the notion held by art historians that we live in an era of profound tolerance and pluralism in art? Or are they related to you being able to surprise, provoke with your work, behave extravagantly or participate in a collective activity?
Farkas:
I rarely read art history. Also, I do not feel that the arts are ruled by profound
tolerance and pluralism. For example, if I walk down one of the most renown
arts fairs in the world like the Art Cologne, then I experience the absence
of radicalism (there is nothing to ‚tolerate‘), the absence of any stakes, the
uniformity. It is without a doubt though that – at least in some parts of the
world – pluralism prevails, and to a more limited amount the possbility of tolerance
as well. I think that the large majority of artists do not want to provoke or
stand out when they are experimenting, but rather want to advance their own
art and the arts in general.
(profound tolerance and pluralism) uralná. Ha például végigsétálok a világ egyik
legrangosabb művészeti vásárán, az Art Cologne-on, akkor a radikalimus hiányát
IV. How do you feel about the notion that contemporary (global) art is characterized by the sentences “Almost everything is possible” and “Nothing is inappropriate”?
Farkas:
This is rubbish from the perspective of the arts. It is as stupid and comes
from a similar direction as the notion of „Everyone is an artist“. I think I
understand, or rather feel, the not at all antipathetic mental gesture behind
this, as e.g. during Dechamp’s time this kind of approach brought about a revolution
in the arts. However, the creation of a piece of art is characterized precicesly
by the fact that – and excuse the elitist, conservative exclamation here - it
only succeeds for extremelty few people, and for this to happen it is normally
necessary to exclude most opportunities and meanderings. The exclamations of
„Almost everything is possible“ and „Nothing is inappropriate“ normally remind
me of political slogans, and that is about as much content as they contain.
A művészet szempontjából hülyeség. Az “Almost everything is possible” and “Nothing is inappropriate” kijelentések engem általában a politikai jelszavakra emlékeztetnek. Körülbelül annyi is a tartalmuk.
V. Is there something you would not use or do in your work anymore (for example hypertext)?
Farkas:
What helps me in any given moment in advancing my work I will use, as long as
it does not oppose my moral conscience. Whatever it is.
VI. If you work collectively as well, how would you describe your collaboration in the group?
How do you perceive your participation in the group, did you learn anything about yourself? Did the experience/abilities of another person ever provide a solution? Does the experience/ability of others become your own experience/ability? Do you arrive at “common” values and abilities? Or is every individual responsible for her/his part?
So, how would you describe the way in which your collaborative work is successful and meaningful?
Farkas:
In the arts, at least in the immediate creation process, I am not a team player.
Thus I do not have any such experiences.
A művészetben, legalábbis a közvetlen
alkotásban, nem vagyok csapatjátékos. Így aztán nincsenek is ilyen tapasztalataim.
VII. In your country, are there new, younger generations of electronic literature
authors? Could you briefly characterize their work and their attitude to the
avant-garde tradition?
Farkas:
For sure there are such creators both in Hungary and in Germany. I do not have
a clear view on the ‚scene‘, thus I can only offer some general remarks on cultural,
political and/or societal contexts. In Hungary there is only a fragmented tradition
of an artistic avant-garde, as there is a brutal tradition on how to suck away
the oxygen from the artistic avant-garde and on how to prevent avant-garde artists
and their art. This is in parts for political, in parts for politically independent
and deeper or wider social, psychological reasons. In addition, the situation
has always been made worse by the fact that avant-garde artists could never
or only to a very limited extent rely on the solidarity of critics and fellow
artists. This is no different today, so that any artist or creator who is too
experimental in their approach encounters the same difficulties as fifty or
one hundred years ago.
In Germany, there would be enough oxygen as noone wants to prevent avant-garde
artists, while critics and especially the artists themselves are a lot more
open. Here, it is rather the disinterest, the effeminacy, obtuseness, boredom
And a fear of all kinds of risks that numbs people and makes the fate of radically
thinking artists and arts more difficult.
